The Akademie-Forum is a space for reflection and debate addressing topics of contemporary significance. Every semester, a series of talks, readings, and discussions features guests from the humanities and social sciences, including philosophers, authors, historians, and public intellectuals. The Forum invites you to participate in the intellectual life of the Barenboim-Said Akademie. Every event includes a short musical performance by an academy student. The Akademie-Forum is curated by Prof. Dr. Jacob Eder, Prof. Dr. Roni Mann und Prof. Dr. Kai Wiegandt.
Events take place in the Mozart Auditorium or the foyer of the Barenboim-Said Akademie.

In the early 20th century, Armenian philosopher, mystic, and composer George Gurdjieff traveled widely in the Caucasus, Middle East, Northern Africa, and Asia. He later transformed his experiences of the diverse local musical traditions he encountered into numerous compositions, most of which have only been accessible in piano transcriptions. Led by artistic director Levon Eskenian, the Gurdjieff Ensemble performs these works in new arrangements for traditional instruments, while also highlighting the centuries-old tradition of Armenian ashughs (bards) such as Jivani, Baghdasar Dbir, and Sayat-Nova.

“Traveler, there is no road. You make your own path as you walk.” Inscribed on the wall of a Spanish monastery, these words were discovered by Luigi Nono in the 1980s and became a kind of motto for his late works. The search for an unattainable music of the future also infuses his penultimate score La lontananza nostalgica utopica futura, composed in 1988–9. Carolin Widmann and the SWR Experimentalstudio bring the piece to the Pierre Boulez Saal. Widmann complements Nono’s meditation on space and sound with Unsuk Chin’s electro-acoustical Spectres-speculaires and works from the 18th and 21st centuries by Telemann, George Benjamin, and Swiss composer Helena Winkelman.

After fleeing the Nazis and settling in the United States in 1939, he only returned to composition in the 1970s, writing music that evokes his hometown of Vienna. In honor of Kaija Saariaho, the leading Finnish composer of the 20th and 21st centuries who died in June 2023, Quatuor Diotima has chosen her Second String Quartet Terra Memoria as the centerpiece of its program. Toward the end of their lives, Franz Schubert and Dmitri Shostakovich both composed virtuoso works for famous violinists of their time: Schubert wrote his Cmajor Fantasy for Josef Slavík, while Shostakovich’s only violin sonata was conceived for David Oistrakh. Leonidas Kavakos and Enrico Pace perform both works together with music by Ludwig van Beethoven and contemporary Swiss composer Richard Dubugnon.
