To open the Boulez anniversary season, Thomas Guggeis and the Boulez Ensemble perform the enigmatic work, which is based on surrealist poems by René Char.

For a number of years, the Signum Quartett has explored music from South Africa, home to its violist, Xandi van Dijk. For English composers of the Renaissance and Baroque eras, the viol consort provided a welcome escape from the strict rules of music written for religious occasions: it became a laboratory where these artists were free to express their most daring ideas and most eccentric musical thoughts. The ensemble Phantasm, one of today’s leading viol consorts and recently heard at the Pierre Boulez Saal in the interdisciplinary performance The Art of Being Human, introduces four of these innovative composers, presenting works by Christopher Tye, Matthew Locke, William Lawes, and Henry Purcell.

Following its early heyday during the Baroque era, it took until the 20th century for the flute to be fully rediscovered as a solo instrument—thanks, in part, to works such as Prokofiev’s 1943 Sonata. Emmanuel Pahud and Yefim Bronfman also perform Carl Reinecke’s “Undine” Sonata, inspired by Friedrich de la Motte-Fouqué’s eponymous fairy tale and one of the few 19th-century works of its kind, and an adaptation of Mozart’s Violin Sonata K. 378. In the early 20th century, Armenian philosopher, mystic, and composer George Gurdjieff traveled widely in the Caucasus, Middle East, Northern Africa, and Asia. He later transformed his experiences of the diverse local musical traditions he encountered into numerous compositions, most of which have only been accessible in piano transcriptions. Led by artistic director Levon Eskenian, the Gurdjieff Ensemble performs these works in new arrangements for traditional instruments, while also highlighting the centuries-old tradition of Armenian ashughs (bards) such as Jivani, Baghdasar Dbir, and Sayat-Nova.

According to Jörg Widmann, Beethoven’s Opus 130 represents the “string quartet of string quartets.” His own Eighth and Tenth Quartets were written in response to the Viennese master’s late work, in particular its famous slow movement, titled “Cavatina.” The New York–based Juilliard String Quartet frames Widmann’s “Beethoven Studies” with their historical model, including both its traditional version and the Grosse Fuge, the work’s original finale.

“Traveler, there is no road. You make your own path as you walk.” Inscribed on the wall of a Spanish monastery, these words were discovered by Luigi Nono in the 1980s and became a kind of motto for his late works. The search for an unattainable music of the future also infuses his penultimate score La lontananza nostalgica utopica futura, composed in 1988–9. Carolin Widmann and the SWR Experimentalstudio bring the piece to the Pierre Boulez Saal. Widmann complements Nono’s meditation on space and sound with Unsuk Chin’s electro-acoustical Spectres-speculaires and works from the 18th and 21st centuries by Telemann, George Benjamin, and Swiss composer Helena Winkelman.

The genesis of Pierre Boulez’s only string quartet Livre pour quatuor—begun by the composer in the late 1940s and left unfinished at the time of his death—resembles a veritable neverending story. In 2018, Philippe Manoury completed the fragment of the fourth movement based on the extant sketches. The West-Eastern Divan Ensemble performs Manoury’s version together with works by Mozart and Schubert.
